Thank you for your interest. The Application date for 2010 has passed.
Our Instructor Development Program is aimed specifically at people who are interested in a career in outdoor, experiential and adventure-based education with Outward Bound or other outdoor education organizations. This is a competency-based program that will provide the skills, tools and capabilities you need to become a proficient outdoor educator.
PROGRAM GOALS
The Mission of Outward Bound is to 'Ignite the Human Spirit, Invite Self-Discovery and Inspire Human Potential' by promoting leadership, self-reliance, adaptability, responsibility, confidence, integrity and persistence. To fulfill this Mission, every Outward Bound instructor and outdoor educator needs to be a highly competent wilderness guide, role model and teacher. They must be equally adept in the areas of safety and judgement, leadership and team development, technical skills, environmental literacy and experiential philosophy. The goal of the Instructor Development Program is to immerse you in a highly intensive training experience designed to equip you with this set of very unique competencies. Certifications covered on this course include Wilderness Advanced First Aid, White Water Rescue Technician - Level 1, and Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association Moving Water certification. You will also receive 2 day orientation to rock climbing and rapelling.
A Wilderness First Responder Bridge course will be offered immediately following the Instructor Development Program. This course is designed for graduates of the Wilderness Advanced First Aid who want to continue their training and upgrade their certification to the Wilderness First Responder level. The Wilderness First Responder Bridge course will be offered to participants of this year's Instructor Development Program at a discounted rate. Please contact us for details.

WHAT YOU LEARN
Outward Bound's strength is in teaching competencies, skills and personal development through an experiential model. On the Instructor Development Program, you will develop these skills by experiencing an Outward Bound course as a participant. Through a series of 'on the trail' workshops and peer teaching opportunities, you will gain insights into the art of outdoor and experiential education.
Through theory and practice, your highly experienced and qualified instructors will help you build technical skills in the following: First Aid, Safety and Judgement, Expedition Planning and Management, Technical Site Management, White Water Canoeing, Wilderness Tripping, River Rescue and Management, and Rock Climbing and Rappelling.
To us, the inward journey is as important as the outward journey. Therefore, this will not be a strictly hard skills learning experience; you’ll be expected to stretch yourself personally as much as physically.
On your course you will also receive training and experience in these areas: Leadership Theory, Conflict Resolution, Goal Setting, Learning and Teaching Theory, Expedition Behaviour, Communication, Decision Making, Facilitation, Leave No Trace camping, Outward Bound Philosophy and Progression, Self-Management, and Group Development
As the program progresses, you’ll have the opportunity to demonstrate and teach your skills through role-playing and simulations. Structured peer and Instructor feedback will round out the learning process, and provide you with a chance to integrate and refine your skills.
THE EXPEDITION
The expeditionary component of the program will be broken down into three phases on three different rivers.
Phase 1 - the 'Training Expedition', will take place at one of the most ideal places to learn white water canoeing in Ontario: the Madawaska River.
Phase 2 - the 'Main Expedition', will take place within world-renowned Algonquin Park. The Petawawa River is both a perfect and classic place to hone your wilderness canoe tripping skills.
Phase 3 - the 'Final Expedition', will take place on the Temagami River. This is your opportunity help to plan and lead a trip. Most of the daily responsibility and decision making will now be carefully transferred to your group under the watchful eyes of your Instructors, to give you a true taste of shared wilderness leadership.
Professional certifications are interspersed throughout the expeditions.
