This Outward Bound Canada course is specialized to focus on the unique challenges girls face during the transition from adolescence to adulthood. This course recognizes the feelings of uncertainty and isolation and frustration that can arise during this challenging period of their lives. This course will help you to take charge of your life, gain new skills and realize what you're capable of. Each experience begins with a physical journey – stepping out of the comforts of day-to-day routines and into an environment that may be very new, adventurous and exciting, but also foreign and uncertain. Facing and overcoming these changes helps to bring out new perspectives and skills for the future. Using the elements of the course as a starting-point, our skilled instructors will teach you how to transfer the skills learned on the adventure to your life back home. These important life skills include caring for yourself, taking responsibility for your choices, expressing your needs and opinions with confidence, and working with others in your school, home and community.
Your journey begins when you meet your group in Huntsville, Ontario. From there, your route will take you into the less-traveled interior of Algonquin Provincial Park, where you will find scenic lakes, challenging portages, rocky campsites and abundant wildlife.
This program has been designed for young women with or without prior camping or canoeing experience, this course will teach wilderness travel techniques and navigation, backcountry cooking, flatwater canoeing, water safety, minimal impact camping, camp-craft and wilderness safety. This journey also includes a solo experience where you will prove your skills while being supervised (from a distance!) by our experienced instructional team. Often described as the most transformative part of the experience, your solo will give you the chance to reflect on earlier conversations from the expedition, absorb important realizations about yourself, and leave behind anything that will no longer serve you going forward.
