March Break Dog Sledding in Algonquin Park

CONTRACTED COURSES FOR GROUPS OF ALL AGES:

We have a challenge for you this winter: do what you promise yourself you'll do every year - something completely different! Break out of the traditional mold and treat yourself to a new adventure - dog sledding! It's fun, it's exciting, and it's very Canadian.

These great expeditions run in Algonquin Park, one of Canada's most famous wilderness landmarks. The park in the winter is quite astounding. Quiet and peaceful, the trees wear blankets of snow, and there is no vehicular traffic in this winter wonderland. Animal tracks dot the fresh snow which glints in the sparkling sunshine, or, under the beautiful moonlight!

It's all hands-on: you'll learn dog and dog sled handling, how to pack your sled, harness the dogs, and hook your team up to your sled. And of course, you'll learn the 'commands' that will set you off on your way along the beautifully groomed network of interconnecting trails in Algonquin Park.

You and your group will head out on a four to five hour journey to one of our winter base camps in Algonquin Park. In the wall tents, we'll light the woodstoves and celebrate our arrival with tasty hot meals and thermoses of delicious soup. You will learn how to care for the dogs, get yourself ready to 'sleep warm', and share your thoughts about the day with the group. Sometimes called 'hot camping', our traditional winter camp consists of large canvas wall tents heated by wood stoves and illuminated by candles or lanterns. This creates an amazing space for cooking, sleeping, storytelling in the comfort of a heated shelter.

As the sun sets, the intimate nature of spending time in the beauty of winter with a small group of people is revealed. Camped beside beautiful lakes, we'll have the opportunity to stargaze, go for moonlit walks or hear a wolf howl, and play games out on the ice. Later, in the warmth of the tents, a candlelit storytelling atmosphere often descends with laughter and lively discussions. Perhaps the most rewarding part of a dog sled trip is the intimate bond that is quickly established between you, your co-participants, and your team of dogs. Lying snug and warm in your sleeping bag, under the stars, listening to the dogs sing the call of the wild is an experience you will never forget.

You don't require any previous dog sledding or winter camping experience for this trip. Your Instructors will teach you everything you need to know from mushing the dogs to staying warm and dry at night. You do need to bring fresh energy and an enthusiasm to learn and work with a group of new friends. You'll head home having learned new skills, met new people, and earned memories that will last a life-time.

We look forward to you joining us on this truly unique, Canadian experience!
