Iceland Expedition Team: Siobhan Stevenson

Finally, in the early 1990s, the stars aligned and I was able to participate in Outward Bound’s educator course. A three week canoe trip in Wabakimi. The experience was everything I had always dreamed it would be: intense, rich, immersive, sublime and 100% life affirming. From that first adventure, I never looked back. I have returned to Wabakimi (among other select parks: Woodland Caribou, Temagami) as part of an annual canoe trip. There is nothing more optimistic than a canoe strapped to the side of a float plane at the start of a journey.

Siobhan Stevenson - Outward Bound Canada Reach Beyond Expedition to Iceland

In 2013, I returned to Outward Bound and participated in their West Coast Trail hike. OB never disappoints. And now to Iceland.

My fantasy: a full year in the north and off the grid. I’d love this project to include building the cabin and procuring supplies for the long winter… I have yet to find someone—even among my most intrepid canoe partners— to agree to join me. I live in hope as I try to figure out a way to legitimate a year long research sabbatical from the university where I work… I admit, it’s a bit of a stretch: critical policy studies and a year in the bush… but, never say never.
