Mt. Kilimanjaro Expedition Team: Allan Sutherland
I have always had a love of the outdoors. This started in my youth as my parents were of modest means and camping was our preferred method of family vacation. I was hooked early on and became an active participant in the Boy Scouts of Canada and a Queen Scout by the time I was 16.
College ensued, McGill for Engineering and then York University for an MBA. I took up scuba diving with some college friends and this is still a favorite past time, especially in the clear, warm waters of the Caribbean. Canoeing became another favorite activity and every year six of us would take a five-day wilderness canoe trip on remote rivers such as the Du Moines River in Quebec.
My wife Sheri and I were married in 1985 and have been blessed with four wonderful children. Our love for the outdoors is reflected in our first home together was a cottage in the Kawartha’s. We have so many great memories from our time together with our family on Buckhorn Lake. What a privilege is was for our young children to experience the outdoors almost every week of the year.
After 46 wonderful years in Canada, Sheri and I had the opportunity to move to South Carolina in 1995 along with our four young children. We have spent the last 15 plus years focused on raising our children and providing them with a variety of life’s experiences through participation in sports, travel, scuba diving, and hiking.
I just recently retired and we were with the Cole family in the Carolina’s on a short vacation. Dave Cole mentioned the opportunity to hike Mt Kilimanjaro as a fundraiser so others less fortunate can experience the joys, pleasures and personal growth that can come from a wilderness adventure. I immediately knew this was a chance of a lifetime with everything I could ask for wrapped into a single adventure. What an opportunity! – Travel to Africa, challenge myself to be the best I can be, help raise money and awareness for Outward Bound Canada – and share this experience with my daughter Devon, my friend David, his son Sebastian and others on the trip – how blessed could one possibly be!
