Mt. Kilimanjaro Expedition Team: Devon Sutherland
When I am not taking care of patients in the hospital, I absolutely love to be outdoors. I find that I am most in tune with others and myself when I realize how small I am in comparison with the vastness of our universe.
About a year or so ago I decided to join a seven-day backpacking trip to Yosemite National Park with eleven strangers, hiking over 60 miles. This trip challenged me emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically. The moment that I finished this expedition, I knew that I wanted the outdoors to become part of my life. Since then I have hiked in many national parks, taken up an interest in running, white water and flat water kayaking, and many more hobbies!
When I first heard about this trip, I immediately knew that I wanted to go. After all, when would I ever have the chance to visit Africa, let alone trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro? Once I found out the trip was to support Outward Bound’s funded programs for youth at risk, women survivors of violence, and veterans struggling with post traumatic stress disorder, I knew that this was something that I would be passionate about. Outdoor adventures personally have molded and shaped my mental health in a positive light and have proved to be life changing and healing to the soul.
Not only will this trip push my limits mentally, physically, and spiritually, but as an added bonus, I have an opportunity to help others experience the redemption and healing that comes thru adventure and nature.
