Building Resiliency in Uncertain Times: A Message from Andrew Young, Executive Director

In the midst of COVID-19, we want to update you on how Outward Bound Canada is responding to this crisis. First, however, we want you to know that we’re thinking of you at this time. You’re an integral part of the wider Outward Bound community, so we hope you—and those closest to you—are staying safe and calm during this rapidly changing situation.

We have made the decision to cancel all of our courses scheduled from now until May 25, 2020. Although our wilderness-based courses consist of small groups and involve little social interaction with the wider community, it is imperative that we do our part to limit the spread of the virus, which includes discouraging unnecessary travel. In addition, many of the parks and wilderness sites used during our courses are temporarily closed. You can learn more about our organizational response to COVID-19 here.

Since the majority of Outward Bound courses occur in the summer, at this point we remain hopeful that we will have another great season of building strong and resilient youth through challenging journeys of self-discovery in the natural world. Given the challenges the world is now facing, it’s clear that the Outward Bound experience is needed now more than ever to equip young people with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in a changing and unpredictable world.

Thanks to the support we receive from our generous donors and partners, Outward Bound is able to provide fully funded programs and financial assistance to youth from diverse cultural, economic, and social backgrounds. Given the current economic challenges, we expect that even more families will require this financial assistance in 2020.

If you’re in a position to give right now, please consider making a donation today to help even more young people navigate life’s challenges and opportunities with confidence as they build skills in problem-solving, teamwork, communication, leadership and compassion.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Outward Bound Canada. We’re in this together.

Sincerely,

Andrew Young
Executive Director
Outward Bound Canada

P.S. Here is a testimonial we recently received from a student:

“My course was an incredible experience which benefited me in numerous ways. It allowed me to expand my connection to people as well as nature. I continue to use the skills and confidence I took away from this course in my life. I continue to practice patience, acceptance and compassion, as well as remaining resilient in harsh situations and having more tolerance for adversity.”
