Outward Bound Canada’s Hope for the Future
We want to thank you for your support of Outward Bound Canada during this difficult time. We hope that you are doing as well as possible and that you and your family are safe and healthy.
In the midst of this global pandemic, Outward Bound Canada remains focused on the critical role we will play in helping society heal and rebuild once this crisis subsides. In the meantime, we are also having to respond to a significant disruption of our revenue—primarily through decreased opportunities for fundraising and the cancellation of many of our courses for individuals and school/group partners—and the negative impact this will have on our organization.
Despite facing serious financial challenges, we are strategically positioning the organization so that we can resume our transformational programs when the situation improves. Some of the actions we’ve taken include:
1. cutting all discretionary spending;
2. evaluating our course offerings to determine how we can respond most effectively once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted; and
3. significantly reducing our administrative costs through temporary pay cuts and lay-offs (we are currently evaluating the possibility of wage subsidy relief from the federal government).
These measures—particularly those directly impacting our valued employees—have required us to make hard but necessary decisions to ensure the organization’s continued existence. At present, we don’t know when parks and wilderness sites will reopen, travel restrictions will be lifted, or groups larger than 5-10 people will be allowed to gather together. However, we are doing everything possible to ensure we can resume our programs as soon as it is safe and logistically feasible to do so.
With over 50 years of service, Outward Bound Canada has a rich history of helping young people develop the resilience needed to thrive in a rapidly changing and unpredictable world. Given the challenges we’re now facing, it’s clear that the Outward Bound experience will be desperately needed in the days ahead. We look forward to the future with optimism, prepared to assist our youth in building skills in problem-solving, teamwork, communication, leadership and compassion so they can navigate life’s challenges and opportunities with confidence.
We hope you will be encouraged and inspired by these words from a recent youth participant: “Outward Bound opened my eyes to a world of adventure, hard work, new friends and nature. It made me realize that I should be grateful for the little moments in life that I take for granted. At times it was hard and I just wanted to give up and go home, but I didn’t.”
We believe that there are better days ahead, and we look forward to your continued support and partnership. Please feel free to contact either of us if you have any questions or feedback about the ongoing mission of Outward Bound Canada.
