$59,100 OTF Grant Empowers Outward Bound Canada to Overcome Pandemic Challenges
Toronto – In 2021, Outward Bound Canada received a $59,100 Resilient Communities Fund grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to rebuild and recover from the impacts of COVID-19. A registered charity, Outward Bound focuses on equipping youth for the future through adventures in nature, building resilience, social and emotional intelligence, and environmental leadership. Due to the pandemic, Outward Bound experienced reduced revenue through program restrictions and increased operating costs.
“We are grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their generous support this year,” said Andrew Young, Executive Director of Outward Bound. “This grant has enabled us to cover staffing costs, provide additional training for instructors on new health and safety protocols, and purchase additional equipment such as individual tents to meet COVID-19 guidelines.”
Bolstered by this support from OTF, Outward Bound resumed much of its youth programming in Ontario this season, enabling hundreds of participants to disconnect from technology, get out into nature and make new friends while adhering to COVID-19 health protocols. This included the launch of a new flatwater canoeing expedition in Georgian Bay that was created for 2SLGBTQ+ youth.
“This investment by the Ontario Trillium Foundation is so important for the physical and mental wellbeing of youth in Ontario,” said Young. “These experiences will contribute to their social and emotional development and help them to thrive in the future.”
Using nature as its classroom, Outward Bound enables youth to get away from their daily lives, creating opportunities for them to engage in self-discovery and experiential learning. Expert instructors lead participants through novel, real-life experiences that require groups to collaboratively problem solve through challenge, failure, and success, developing skills that are essential for future success at school, work and in life.
The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant cannot be underestimated,” said Young. “We have heard from so many youth, parents and guardians this year about how our programs have had a positive impact on the mental and physical wellbeing of participants.”
