International Women’s Day: Celebrating Change with Challenge

How would you celebrate your retirement? How about a 12-day snowshoeing trek through the arctic’s Baffin Island? In honour of International Women’s Day, we are celebrating our Chair of the Board, Anne Fitzgerald and her upcoming expedition in support of Outward Bound Canada.

Born in North Carolina, Anne was an adventurer from a young age. She spent hours scuba diving in the Gulf, looking for shipwrecks and fancying herself an explorer akin to Jacques Cousteau.

At the age of 18, she participated in her first expedition with Outward Bound; however, it wasn’t until years later that she realized how much it impacted her life. “The deep wilderness developed my confidence, and I felt unstoppable. I began taking risks and soon recognized I was not scared of anything” As a young woman, Anne also ran a youth leadership development program that fulfilled the need for youth to spend multiple weeks immersed in nature.

Harnessing the resilience she developed through hours spent outside, Anne began her career in commercial and criminal litigation before moving to Canada in 2002. Anne joined the Cineplex team in 2004 and, at the time, was one of only eight women on the senior leadership team of 35 people. For 17 years, Anne served as the Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary at Cineplex before announcing her retirement in January 2022.

To celebrate her retirement milestone, Anne is preparing for her snowshoeing expedition with her longtime friend and fellow board member, Dan Gormley. The March 24th trip will cross Baffin Island, the largest island in the Arctic territory of Nunavut, raising funds for Outward Bound Canada. Anne says, “I’ve never been to the Arctic. I have the strength and energy needed, yet this is probably the most difficult, exciting and intimidating trip I ever decided to take.”

“This expedition is my tribute to Outward Bound Canada, and I personally need a real demarcation when I’m making a life-changing decision… plus – as my close friend says – life begins at the end of your comfort zone”.

Anne, Outward Bound is thankful for your leadership and support. We wish you all the best on your future adventures – we can’t wait to see what you do next!
