West Coast 21-day Sea Kayaking and Surfing

Go on the ultimate West Coast adventure this summer!

Explore Clayoquot Sound by kayak and surfboard as you travel through ocean waves and tiny inlets. At night, after a day full of adventure, pitch your tents on sandy beaches or on the edge of ancient rainforests to enjoy the breathtaking West Coast sunsets.

This exciting 21-day course will make your group work together to creatively problem-solve while honing your existing leadership and communication skills. You will be challenged physically and mentally throughout the expedition, and the sense of accomplishment at the end of the three weeks will stay with you for the rest of your life.

If you choose to apply the expedition towards a high school credit, your course work will be done through activities, group discussions and analysis, and daily journal reflections.

AREA & ACTIVITY

This journey takes place in Clayoquot Sound, on the edge of Pacific Rim National Park, the traditional territory of three Nuu-chah-nulth Nations: the Ahousaht, the Hesquiaht and Tla-o-qui-aht.

Sea kayaking: You will travel in either solo or tandem fibreglass sea kayaks through class 2 water as outlined by the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of B.C. During the expedition, your instructors will teach you paddling strokes, self and assisted rescue techniques, plus basic nautical navigation, including understanding tides, currents and weather.

Surfing: You will be instructed in basic surf techniques, including understanding and reading waves, basic surf safety and etiquette.

Our expert instructors will lead you through unique challenges that require your group to work together to problem-solve, reflect on your journey and discuss how to apply your skills and learning once you return home. SOLO EXPERIENCE

Every Outward Bound Canada course incorporates a solo experience. This includes up to 48 hours in a secluded spot where you will set up your shelter and take time for self-reflection. Instructors are close enough to offer support if needed. The solo is not a challenge of survival in the wilderness but rather a supportive environment to take time for yourself, away from the distractions of everyday life. While it may seem like a daunting challenge at first, it is often the most impactful part of the course, as you get an opportunity that few others will ever experience – being alone in nature.
