West Coast 10-Day Sea Kayaking (September)

Geared for youth 19-25, this expedition features sea kayaking and camping along the beautiful waters of Vancouver Island. This stunning environment is an incredible teacher and you will come away from this challenging course having learned how to work more effectively in a group and be a fairer and influential leader. This is a great opportunity for youth looking for an exciting outdoor adventure before resuming their studies/work, or for those choosing to take a Gap Year.

Note: This course is restricted to B.C. residents only.

Your journey will take to the coastal waters of Vancouver Island to learn the skills of sea kayaking. This area is a paddler’s paradise, with its numerous inlets, islands, waterfalls and cascading pools that blend with ocean water. We will continue to explore the region by kayak, boasting incredible wildlife, rugged rocky coastline, old growth rainforest, pristine rivers, lakes, beaches and beautiful mountains.

Designed for students without prior camping or kayaking experience, this West Coast Journey course will teach wilderness travel techniques and navigation, backcountry cooking, sea kayaking, minimal impact camping, camp-craft and wilderness safety. This journey also includes a solo experience where you will prove your skills while being supervised (from a distance!) by our experienced instructional team.  Often described as the most transformative part of the experience, your solo will give you the chance to reflect on earlier conversations from the expedition, absorb important realizations about yourself, and leave behind anything that will no longer serve you going forward.

Outward Bound Canada’s Journey courses are designed to help you take charge of your life and realize what you are capable of.  Each experience begins with a physical journey – stepping out of the comforts of day-to-day routines and into an environment that may be very new, adventurous and exciting, but also foreign and uncertain. Facing these changes helps to bring out new perspectives. Using the challenges of the course as a starting-point, our skilled instructors will teach you how transfer the skills learned on course to your life at home. These important life skills include caring for yourself, taking responsibility for your choices, expressing your needs and opinions with confidence, and working with others in your life at home.

Outward Bound Canada is a not-for-profit, charitable, educational organization. Our goal is to increase Canadians’ ability to access Outward Bound Canada’s life-changing programs. In order to support this goal, Outward Bound Canada offers a bursary program designed for families in need of financial assistance. If you require funding support, please visit our Fund Your Adventure page.

Alternately, if you would like to fundraise for your course on your own, our Fundraising Kit provides helpful resources and tips to help you get started and achieve success.
