Outward Bound Canada’s West Coast 5-day Manning Park Expedition course is designed to help you take charge of your life and realize what you are capable of. Each experience begins with a physical journey – stepping out of the comforts of day-to-day routines and into an environment that may be very new, adventurous and exciting, but also foreign and uncertain. Facing these changes helps to bring out new perspectives. Using the challenges of the course as a starting-point, our skilled instructors will teach you how transfer the skills learned on course to your life at home. These important life skills include caring for yourself, taking responsibility for your choices, expressing your needs and opinions with confidence, and working with others in your life at home.
AREA & ACTIVITIES
Each day you will hike through the mountains of Manning Park, traveling through breathtaking views and learning more about the outdoors. You will observe some of British Columbia’s rich geological history, diverse vegetation, snow-capped mountains, iridescent waters, abundant wildlife and scenic vistas. During your travel you will take the time to recognize the First Nations people that walked this land before you.
Designed for students without prior camping or hiking experience, this course will teach wilderness travel techniques and navigation, backcountry cooking, hiking, minimal impact camping, camp-craft and wilderness safety. This journey also includes an extended solo experience where you will prove your skills while being supervised (from a distance!) by our experienced instructional team. Often described as the most transformative part of the experience, your solo will give you the chance to reflect on earlier conversations from the expedition, absorb important realizations about yourself, and leave behind anything that will no longer serve you going forward.
This course qualifies as a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Bronze or Silver Level Adventurous Journey (including preliminary training, practice and qualifying journey) as well as the Gold Level Residential Project. For more info visit the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award website here.
