Outward Bound Canada:

Canada’s charity empowering youth through nature

Meet Mace Carnahan, a recent alumni who embraced the challenge of an Outward Bound program. What began as a 21-day adventure along the west coast of Vancouver Island turned into a life-changing experience.

Shown here in video and also captured in this blog, Mace talks about how excited he was when he applied (and received!) a scholarship for his expedition, after learning about Outward Bound Canada from his school guidance counselor. This once-in-a-lifetime trip became a unique opportunity for Mace to step out of his comfort zone, discover hidden strengths, make deep friendships and develop a new appreciation for himself and the world around him.

“I was a changed man, but I had to figure out what that looked like and how I was going to move through life going forward.” – Mace Carnahan

Outward Bound Canada – much more than adventure.

In an increasingly digital and fast-paced world, learning in nature is a life-changing opportunity for youth to disconnect from technology and embark on a path of personal growth and discovery that simply isn’t possible online or in a regular classroom. By providing challenging experiences in nature, we act as a catalyst for personal growth and foster self-confidence, resilience and environmental awareness in young people. These skills empower them to be the changemakers and leaders our planet needs.

But for families living paycheck to paycheck, these experiences come with significant financial hurdles. At Outward Bound Canada, we believe that all youth should have access to impactful outdoor education experiences that help them reach their potential. Thanks to our generous donors, in 2023 we were able to provide 4,000 youth like Mace with amazing opportunities that they otherwise wouldn’t have had access to

Image of a pie chart displaying 2023 participant statstext reads our 2023 participant profile: 50% of youth from families whose income just covers basic expenses, 21% members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, 18% people of colour, 14% First Nations, Inuit or Metis, 9% People with a disability, 4% newcomers to Canada
