Make the most of the snowy season with a classic experience in a true winter wonderland this March Break!

Our iconic snowshoe expedition on the Historic Rail Trail in Algonquin Park – featuring quiet, snowy trails and cozy overnights in self-maintained hot tents – will give you magical memories you’ll never forget!

Area & activities

Algonquin Park’s 7,635 square-kilometres of forests, bogs, lakes and rivers, located in the traditional territory of the Omàmìwininìwag and Anishinabewaki Peoples, set the backdrop for an extraordinary winter experience.

Your adventure begins when you meet your group near Minden, Ontario. Here you’ll meet your seasoned instructors and get geared up for your course. The trip is a hands-on experience from the start, where you’ll learn navigation skills, proper wood gathering, camp crafts, setting up a hot tent, meal preparation and other skills essential to the success of your adventure. But it’s not just about surviving, it’s about thriving, so we’ll also focus on building your leadership skills and resilience.

Once we hit the trail, you’ll traverse the snowy landscape on snowshoes, pulling your gear in pulks (sleds) during the day, and spend nights in traditional canvas-walled tents heated by a crackling wood-burning stove or winter shelters under the stars.

Winter camping isn’t for the faint of heart; it requires both individual grit and teamwork for a successful journey – and you’ll enjoy every minute of it.

Learning outcomes

Our expert instructors will guide you through unique challenges that require your group to work together to solve problems, reflect on your journey, and discuss how to apply your skills and what you’ve learned when you return home. The course is designed to have a lasting and measurable impact in three key areas:

Improved resilience – Improve your mental and physical health and learn how to overcome challenges to succeed.

Better leadership and teamwork skills – Learn the skills you need to succeed in school, work and life by becoming more confident, cooperative and a respectful team member.

Stronger connection to nature – Develop a lifelong relationship with nature.

Is this course right for me?

This course is for students aged 14-16 and rated Level 3 in social-emotional challenge and Level 3 in physical challenge. Learn more about the levels of difficulty. We provide all equipment for the expedition, and participants can borrow personal OBC gear such as gloves and jackets if needed.

This course is best suited for those who have a positive attitude, are open-minded and enjoy a challenge and learning new skills. Winter camping is one of our most challenging activities! Participants can expect to push their limits, build their confidence, learn new independent skills, and experience the importance of teamwork during winter expeditions. Those who sign up should be well prepared to face the challenges of the programs and still have a lot of fun in the process.

Solo experience

Each Outward Bound Canada course includes a solo experience as an opportunity for self-reflection. In this course, the solo experience consists of a solo sit and meal at the end of the week where participants have the opportunity to be alone in a beautiful natural setting. Instructors are nearby to provide support as needed.

Financial assistance

We believe everyone should have access to exploring nature. We offer full scholarships to help cover the cost of course fees, and the Youth Access Fund offers financial support for those unable to finance their Outward Bound Canada experience personally.
